About
Welcome to Guitar Lessons in L.A.!
I'm excited you are here as I love music, guitar, and teaching. Seeing people learn to play guitar is very rewarding as music is a kind of world in itself that has so many possibilities and dimensions that it can bring to our lives.
Guitar lessons in L.A. is here to help you get started on your journey, from the basics of learning the musical alphabet to playing chords and then on to your favorite songs.
Good news, there are only 12 notes in the musical alphabet and you already know the 7 letters that make them up: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. There are 5 notes in-between some of the letters you may have heard of called sharps or flats equaling 12. While the guitar neck may look mysterious at first glance, it is just the same 12 notes repeating on each of the strings.
Then learning guitar chords is simply playing two or three notes in the alphabet at the same time. Striking a chord, something resonating!

My name is John Connell, and I’ve been passionate about the guitar for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a family where music was always in the air—from the swing of Jimmy Dorsey to the rock riffs of Jimi Hendrix—shaped my deep appreciation for all things musical.
Although I started lessons at age nine, the traditional methods didn’t resonate with me. It wasn’t until my teenage years, playing in garage bands and later at church, that my love for the instrument truly took root.
Today, I focus on teaching the basics of guitar, beginner tips and tricks, and foundational music theory. My goal is to make learning the guitar an inspiring and enjoyable experience for all students, whether you're picking up the instrument for the first time or rediscovering it after a break.
Beyond teaching, I volunteer with Guitars for Veterans, helping veterans learn to play while providing them with instruments. This cause is especially close to my heart as my father was a World War II veteran. Through this program, I’ve had the privilege of sharing his stories and learning more about the challenges our veterans face, all while connecting through music.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me taking lessons myself to expand my knowledge and skills—because I believe a teacher is always a student.
Let’s start your guitar journey together and make some music!

Guitar Lessons for Veterans
My father was a WWII veteran, and his service inspired me to dedicate time to helping veterans. I began by working with the Salvation Army, assisting veterans in finding employment. Eventually, this led me to volunteer teaching guitar to veterans. Teaching at the Veterans Administration not only strengthened my passion for music but also helped me discover my love for teaching guitar. It’s amazing how giving your time in service often leads to receiving just as much, if not more, in return.
